We implemented three prototype interfaces that each provide varying degrees of support in enabling remote users to work with a flying robot to plan, communicate goals, accomplish tasks, and respond to changes in a dynamic environment. We designed several realistic tasks for use in evaluating human–robot interaction within the context of indoor free-flyer operation. Extending prior work in control interfaces for ground robots, we conducted a formative study in order to identify key design requirements for free-flyer interfaces. In this work, we explored the design of interfaces that support users in working with free-flying robots to accomplish tasks including inventory logistics and management, environmental data collection, and visual inspection. These free-flying robots hold great promise in assisting humans by acting as mobile sensor platforms to collect data in areas that are difficult to access or infeasible to instrument. Recent advances in the design of sensors, motors, and microelectromechanical systems have enabled the development of a new class of small aerial robots. Robots are becoming increasingly prevalent and are already providing assistance in a variety of activities, ranging from space exploration to domestic housework. Overall, our method achieves an average grasp success rate of 88% when grasping novels objects presented in isolation and an average success rate of 73% when grasping novel objects presented in dense clutter. This enables us to generate large amounts of training data and it grounds our training labels in grasp mechanics. Second, we show how geometric grasp conditions can be used to generate labeled datasets for the purpose of training the machine learning algorithm. This helps focus grasp detection away from regions where no grasp can exist. First, we identify a set of necessary conditions on the geometry of a grasp that can be used to generate a set of grasp hypotheses. The output is a set of hand poses that are expected to be good grasps. The input to our algorithm is a point cloud and the geometric parameters of the robot hand.
